Answering the Call: From the Firehouse to God's House

Transitioning from Deputy Fire Chief to full-time Senior Pastor has been both rewarding and challenging. After over 22 years in the fire service, I’ve gathered countless stories and lessons—many of which now guide me in my new role. I feel compelled to share these insights, in the hope that they’ll offer encouragement and guidance to others navigating their own journeys in leadership, ministry, or life.

Never Leave Your Partner Behind

In firefighting, one of the most critical lessons is this: Never leave your partner behind. It’s a principle rooted in trust, teamwork, and survival. But this lesson isn’t confined to the fireground—it’s a truth for life and faith.

I’ll never forget a rookie firefighter who learned this lesson the hard way. During a house fire, he charged into the blaze without realizing he’d forgotten his gloves. As soon as the heat hit, he bolted back out, leaving his lieutenant inside. Thankfully, we were able to fix the situation quickly, but the message was clear: when the heat is on, you don’t abandon your partner.

Life brings its own fires—challenges that test your relationships. Whether it’s your spouse, a family member, or a close friend, the principle remains the same: stick together, no matter how tough it gets. These moments aren’t the time to run away but to draw closer and move forward together.

Spiritually, this principle is even more profound. Proverbs 18:24 tells us about a friend who sticks closer than a brother—a perfect picture of Jesus. He promises never to leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). When life turns up the heat, He remains faithfully by our side.

Here’s the challenge: stay close to those who matter in your life and never leave Jesus behind. He is the ultimate partner, the one who ensures we make it through life’s trials with strength and hope. Answer the call—in your relationships and your faith. Stick together, stay committed, and trust that with the right partner, you can face anything.
